Susan Volkan
Movement Educator & Somatic Practitioner
Susan Volkan is a movement educator and somatic practitioner with more than 20 years of experience teaching yoga, Pilates and embodied movement. She has served on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis since 2001, where she currently teaches yoga and Pilates in the Somatic Studies Certificate Program.
An E-RYT 500, YACEP, comprehensively certified Pilates instructor and certified SATYA (Sensory Awareness Training for Yoga) instructor, Susan completed extensive advanced training in yoga and yoga therapy with Tias Little and Prajna Yoga. She has also studied extensively with Pilates educator Ellie Herman and served as technical editor for Herman’s Pilates for Dummies, 2nd Edition. Her teaching integrates somatic awareness, functional anatomy, biomechanics, and traditional yoga & Pilates to cultivate strength, mobility, stability, and ease.
With an earlier background in professional theater and performance, Susan brings an artist’s sensitivity to embodied learning. She encourages students to develop greater curiosity, awareness, and adaptability in their movement while discovering patterns that are efficient, sustainable, and individualized.
